It Started with a Headache…
You’ve been there,maybe you’re there right now.
One symptom pops up. A headache. Palpitations. Dizziness.
Nothing new, right? You’ve felt it before. You know this routine.
But then your mind kicks in.
“Is this another crash?”
“What if it doesn’t stop this time?”
“Why does this keep happening?”
“What’s wrong with me?”
Before you know it, you’re not just dealing with a symptom anymore, you’re battling anxiety, fear, guilt, frustration, sadness… all at once.
And just like that, you’ve gone from one problem to twenty.
This is the symptom spiral.
And it’s what we’re going to break down, and break out of,today.
From One Problem to a Storm of Stress
When you live with chronic illness, symptoms are inevitable.
They come and go,headaches, heart palpitations, muscle pain, brain fog.
But here’s where things spiral:
🧩 The headache is just one piece.
🔥 It gets amplified by fear: “What if it means something worse?”
😤 Add in frustration: “Why is this still happening?”
😟 Mix in worry: “Am I doing something wrong?”
😔 And guilt: “I’m letting people down again.”
All of a sudden, your brain is juggling 5-10 emotional stressors on top of the physical one.
And your body? It feels under siege.
“You’re anxious about being anxious.
Frustrated about being frustrated.
And scared of your own fear.”
It’s exhausting.
It’s overwhelming.
And it’s completely normal.
Your Brain Thinks It’s Helping,But It’s Not
The brain doesn’t separate emotional stress from physical danger.
If your mind is filled with fear, guilt, or sadness, your brain sees all of that as threats.
So what does it do?
⚠️ Triggers stress hormones
⚠️ Heightens your pain sensitivity
⚠️ Keeps your nervous system on high alert
⚠️ Makes your symptoms feel even worse
And the cycle repeats.
So… How Do You Break the Cycle?
Let’s be real, you can’t always stop the symptom.
But you can control how you respond to it.
Here’s how:
1. Acknowledge the symptom,but don’t feed it.
Say: “This is here. I don’t like it. But I don’t need to panic.”
2. Feel your emotions,but don’t dwell.
It’s okay to feel discouraged. Frustrated. Sad.
Let it move through you, don’t let it move in.
3. Avoid storytelling.
Stop the “what if” train.
Your headache does not mean you’re broken.
Your setback does not erase your progress.
4. Use brain retraining techniques.
Interrupt the cycle. Breathe deeply. Visualize calm. Shift focus.
(You’ll find more of this inside our Academy.)
When a Small Problem Stays Small
Now imagine this instead:
- You get a headache.
- You recognize it, breathe through it, and limit the emotional spiral.
- You stay calm.
- You rest.
- It passes.
Instead of one problem becoming ten…
It stays one small problem. And your body gets a chance to self-regulate and recover.
The Truth: Thoughts Do Matter
Just because you can’t see or measure your thoughts doesn’t mean they aren’t real stressors.
To your brain, a stressful thought is just as dangerous as physical pain.
That’s why your mindset matters so much.
And this is why we say, again and again:
🧠 “You’re just one mind shift away from living a life of thriving health.”
It’s not about ignoring reality.
It’s about not amplifying it.
