36. Brain Retraining Simplified, Step-by-Step Guide *WORKS FOR CHRONIC PAIN*

When to Use Brain Retraining Exercises

You don’t need a perfect time or place to do this exercise. Ideally, practice it before your pain becomes severe—when it’s still manageable. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day, spread throughout the day, to start seeing results. Remember, consistency is key.

The Four Steps of the Exercise

  • Identify the Pain
  • Close your eyes and focus on where you’re feeling the pain. Is it in your head? Behind your eyes? Somewhere in your body? Be specific about the location of your pain.
  • Connect to Your Brain’s Pain Centers
  • Visualize the pain centers in your brain. There are 16 of them, and they process both pain and other sensory inputs like touch and sound. Imagine these centers glowing and connect that glow to the pain you’re feeling.

Expand the Pain Centers

Keep your eyes closed, relax, and take slow, deep breaths. Visualize the pain centers in your brain expanding slightly. As they expand, you may feel a slight increase in pain. This step helps you recognize the connection between the glow in your brain and the pain in your body.

Diminish the Pain Centers

Now, visualize the glow in the pain centers dimming and shrinking. As they shrink, feel the pain in your body slowly dissipate. Repeat this process a few times, gradually reducing the glow each time until the pain diminishes significantly.
