Irene's Story: Living with ME/CFS
My first symptoms showed up when I was about five years old. Everything hurt me, including clothes and people touching me. Getting dried off after a shower made me cry. Around age 10 it started getting debilitating.
School was a struggle. I had sleep paralysis, anxiety, and no focus. By the time I was 16, I was on my fifth high school, and three of them were special ed. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong. Most people just said I was weird or sensitive.
In my twenties I tried a few jobs, which didn't work because I didn't have the capacity. I worked as a bartender and got fired for being too slow. I tried food delivery and just got anxiety and panic attacks. Concerts were the only thing I could still kind of do, and even those left me shaking afterwards.
In 2022 I got COVID for the second time, and I did not respond well at all. I couldn't drive anymore. I could barely shower. I couldn't cook or hang out with a friend. I was bed bound twice for a few weeks at a time, with more than 50 symptoms every day. I thought that was just going to be my life. Couch bound forever.
I was always looking online for answers. I was searching for long COVID stuff, fatigue, brain fog. One of those searches led me to the CFS Recovery channel. I remember watching the videos and thinking, this guy is naming all the things that people told me aren't true. That's what kept me going back, even though I could only watch one or two videos at a time.
The first light bulb came when Coach Krista told me that clothing sensitivity was a nervous system symptom. I thought, maybe I can live. Maybe I can work. Later I went to my summer house with my dad. We ate fried fish and sat in the sun, which I couldn't tolerate before. That's when I noticed I was going somewhere.
Understanding neuroplasticity was a big deal to me. In the Platinum modules we watched neurons grow into each other under a microscope. If it fires together, it wires together. I learned that I could do that. During flare-ups I used the AP Care Kit audio sessions relentlessly. I played with my cat, got fresh air at the edge of our driveway, and reminded myself it was a skill I needed to learn.
Trauma work mattered too. I learned to take the ammo out of my triggers. Every time one came up, I would reframe and balance, and that connection in my brain got rewired. I had to do that a lot. Afterwards I was emotionally much more calm and stable, and that helped with both the trauma recovery and the CFS recovery.
The Science Behind ME/CFS Recovery
In ME/CFS, the nervous system gets stuck in a chronic stress response. Research suggests the issue may be functional rather than structural. Your nervous system may be stuck in protection mode, and even normal activities can feel overwhelming. This is what keeps symptoms like fatigue, pain, brain fog, and sensory sensitivity cycling.
Nervous system retraining uses neuroplasticity, your brain's ability to rewire itself, to help shift out of that stuck state. Instead of managing symptoms, it may address the underlying pattern. That's when real, lasting recovery starts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you recover from ME/CFS?
Yes. Irene is one of thousands of documented recovery wins across CFS Recovery's community. Through nervous system retraining and neuroplasticity protocols, people with ME/CFS have reported meaningful progress. CFS Recovery has helped people from bedridden to semi-functional and everywhere in between.
What is nervous system retraining?
Nervous system retraining uses neuroplasticity principles to help your brain and nervous system shift out of a stuck stress response. In ME/CFS, the nervous system often gets locked in a protective mode after a viral trigger or prolonged stress. Retraining helps it recalibrate so your body can function normally again. It's coaching-based, not medication-based.
