The Urge to Push Through
Many of us feel the urge to push through symptoms and force ourselves to act normally. I’ve been there. I wanted to recover as fast as I could and tried to push through the symptoms, but my body just couldn’t keep up. There are a few reasons why we feel this way:
- Fear of Missing Out: It feels like the world is moving on without you. Your friends and family are progressing in their lives while you feel stagnant or even regressing. This can be incredibly tough and lonely.
- Impatience: We want to get back to our lives as quickly as possible. For me, just a few years ago, I couldn’t even walk 100 meters. The frustration of seeing others live their lives while you feel left behind can be overwhelming.
The Illusion of Being Left Behind
When you’re sick, it feels like you’re on an island watching a cruise ship—representing the world and its opportunities—sail away without you. It’s a tough and lonely feeling, making you want to jump in the water and swim to catch up. But here’s the truth: the world isn’t a ship that sails away forever. Life and opportunities aren’t a one-time chance. You won’t come back to an unrecognizable world; you’ll be able to pick up where you left off, often with better opportunities and a new, healthier perspective.
Changing Your Mindset
Think of yourself as a soccer player on the sidelines. You’re just taking a temporary break. Eventually, you’ll be back on the field, ready to play. This period of rest isn’t the end. It’s a chance to come back stronger and with a more sustainable approach to life. It’s crucial to shift your mindset from feeling left behind to understanding that this is just a temporary timeout.
Practical Steps for Maintaining a Positive Mindset
- Create a Vision: Write down what you want to do when you recover. Be detailed—what are you wearing, how do you feel, what’s the weather like? Use this vision as your North Star when times get tough.
- Stay Positive: Remember, it’s not the end of the world. You’re taking a break to come back stronger. This isn’t a permanent state.
- Join a Community: Engage with others who understand what you’re going through. Whether it’s through comments on videos like this or joining a group, being part of a community helps.
